The Role
When there was work around, most of it was interesting and challenging, though sometimes the tasks were fairly mundane, and occasionally there was little work available. However, this was simply timing of joining the office in a quiet period.
I was told frequently when I started that the Manchester office is the friendliest office you'll ever meet, and after a week I could see what they meant. Everyone is patient, happy to talk you through things again and again, but also happy to give you more work and treat you as a genuine team member as you gain confidence.
There was a lot of training and reiterating that we could ask anyone any question we had. All very helpful for the day to day work I faced and also when weighing up whether or not I'd want to work for the company
As said before, it varied between loads on and none at all. However, it was best when there was loads on, and in quiet periods I had time to focus on the intern project I'd been assigned; without that, however, some days would have been very boring.
I was given client work from day one (including calculations for Kellogg's) and worked on various client teams. I was also project lead on the intern project.
I doubt this will have affected my degree studies much, but certainly this has helped broaden my commercial awareness and business understanding (which was one of my main hopes for the internship).
The Company
A really great place to work
It's hard to say since we're treated like one of the team very quickly, and so if the office has a quiet week, so do the interns
I had a real sense that they were trying to sell working here (which they did well) and equip us to potentially take on a graduate position; most of the new grads were interns in previous years
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
If they offered me a place, I'd most likely take it
The Culture
Very difficult to say. There were only two of us and I commuted in every morning, so this was a bit difficult. However, the two of us got on very well and organised a social event for the office
As I said above, I commuted in (about an hour and a half each day), and the company contributed to the travel costs, but it was still a hit
Wouldn't know!
There were a few social events set up including a cricket match, celebratory drinks (for people who had recently qualified as actuaries in the office) and bowling, and the interns were always invited
