The Role
Very good in places. The Bradenham Business Development centre was a stunning place to go for a few days and the facilitators there gave us a great business and social experience. The work was challenging and useful at times but not always, nor was i given a great deal of responsibility. The staff were incredibly helpful, supportive and passionate and really gave me alot of advice and guidance throughout.
Staff were very appreciative of my efforts and valued my attempts.
Their feedback was constructive and largely positive which helped me feel settled.
Not always great preparation of work for me to do so was often left asking for tasks from anyone and they would often end up being quite tedious admin tasks. However, when work was prepared for me, it was often work designed to stretch my abilities and that was interesting and useful for my development.
I was treated like any other member of the graduate team, and given as much responsibility as my ability would allow most of the time. The presentation i did gave me an opportunity to show off my ability as well.
I am much more familiar with financial regulations and accounts which will be useful in my finance studies in my final year at uni, and also if i attempt to start a business i am now in a much more knowledgable position to do so.
The Company
I was in a very small office and often in teams of 1 or 2 people so there was often plenty of silence to allow me to work well, yet there was a healthy amount of socialising with the other staff and occasional out of office events, although i think the other Grant Thornton offices would have had a more lively atmosphere.
Lots of opportunities for feedback and chances to prove my ability, yet at times not enough useful work for me to do. However, I would say that i have been well supported in my efforts and my skills have been thoroughly developed throughout. The Bradenham training centre gave me a vital opportunity to network with other interns which came at a great time in the internship.
Plenty of work was given to me to stretch my ability even if it may have initially slowed the efficiency of the team. Plenty of time was taken by all staff to explain any questions i have had. Detailed constructive feedback has been given to me for every major task. All 3 partners in the office agreed to meetings with me to help boost my understanding of the firm.
Company Parties/Events
Good support networks and a clear path for career progression are appealing. However, i cannot defer a place with them, and i would i like to work in a larger office in a more central location.
The Culture
Occasional nights out and out of office events were organised. There was a football tournament, a cricket match, and the whole office had lunch at a local pub one day.
Not especially expensive, but plenty of travelling adds up in petrol costs!
Never got a chance to experience it, but it looks like there are only a few standard sized clubs around.
I played cricket with the office after work one day, and spent a day painting a hospice with them on a corporate social responsibility day. There were occasional opportunities to have lunch with staff, however any people ate at their desks, and the nights out weren't well attended because the office is quite small.
