The Role
I really enjoyed my experience at Grant Thornton overall - six weeks of work seems like a long time but it went really quickly!
Everyone I met/worked with were incredibly helpful and friendly. Even when busy they would take time to explain work to me and find things that I could help with. In return I felt that they really appreciated my help, even with simple jobs, especially on busy audits where there was a lot to do. I always felt included and the interns were always invited to any social events going on.
Due to working on different client sites, you don't get to spend that much time with your line manager or buddy (unless they are put on the same job as you). Therefore you are more likely to get support/guidance from the more senior members of your audit team. However, when I did ask them a question or speak to them they would be really helpful and get back to me quickly. I also mentioned the possibility of wanting to work in London to my line manager during my appraisal and she spoke to recruitment and put me in touch with someone I could talk to about it. The senior staff on the audit were also always really helpful and willing to explain things to me or help me if I got stuck.
I feel I had a good level of work to do, I didn't feel worried about the amount I had to do and my team would always find me something to move onto once I finished a task.
I was given complete responsibility for particular sections of the audit, and also for going to speak to the client to obtain any information I needed. The work and responsibility was similar to that of someone just starting and so I think it gave a really good idea of what a full time position would be like.
I learnt a lot about audit work which would be extremely useful if starting a graduate position. More importantly though, I think I developed skills which would be useful in any career path I choose to take, as well as for my last year of university, for example presentation skills and interacting with clients.
The Company
Although there were quieter and busier days, depending on who was at the office/client, there were always trainees or interns to sit with, everyone was really friendly and easy to talk to.
Everything seemed to be really well organised with the interns having things planned for the whole six weeks.
As well as going on a two day course at Bradenham, their training facilities, we were given a lot of time and opportunities to ask questions and learn.

All interns are assessed on their performance during the internship and a presentation we have to do in the last week of our internship, and can be offered a job based on this. I have received positive feedback from my final appraisal and am waiting to hear whether I will be offered a job. In general if you enjoy the work and perform well, I think Grant Thornton would be happy to offer you a job.
The Culture
I got on with all the other North West interns really well and we regularly went for drinks/nights out. At the induction, course and Corporate Responsibility Day we also got the chance to socialise with interns from the other regions which I really enjoyed.
Manchester is not too expensive
The nightlife in Manchester is great.
Loads, we were invited to lots of socials and a summer BBQ. There were also opportunities to get involved in some interoffice sports tournaments for some people. You can also get involved in volunteering activities.
