The Role
A very enjoyable placement, felt very welcome, felt like I was giving real value to the firm. Enjoyed coming to work! Was a really valuable experience and one that I would like to do again, you can see that real effort has been put into designing the internship programme.
Colleagues were very welcoming and helpful, made me feel like I was very much part of the oraganisation. I was never discouraged from asking questions or asking for help. There isn't the pressure of someone chcking over your shoulder constantly, however you can always ask for help from someone.
Lots of people that I could talk to if I ever needed to, everyone was very helpful and made it clear that they had a lot of time for me.
Had a steady flow of work, came in dips and trughs, sometimes I would have little to do, sometimes lots, but I managed my workload well and never felt too bored or too busy.
Given a decent level of responsibility, probably quite similar to new grads, which was part of the reason that I felt welcome, I was involved in lots of real life work with genuine clients, which made me feel valued. It's nice to know that the work you are doing is actually going to make a difference.
Lots of on the job training, which will really help me in my future career, and lots of careers and general life training as well, that will definitely be useful for uni.
The Company
The atmosphere was a lot better than I expected, actuaries are usually called broing and I was warned about this before I began, however this was not the case and the atmosphere in the office was very enjoyable and entertaining.
As mentioned earleir, you could see that a lot of time had been taken by the associates to set up the internship, there was lots for us to do, a lot of presentations that we had to do! So be prepared for that if you want to join. But we always had a project that we could be working on if there was not much to do.
Spent the first 2 weeks going to lots of training sessions and being taught a lot about the firm, this was really worthwhile and the company did invest a lot of time into us, with new graduates training us up.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Hopefully will be offered a contract as the firm offer contracts to most of the summer interns that complete the 6 weeks without being terrible. I would gladly accept if offered a job in the graduate scheme as well as I have really enjoyed my time with the firm.
The Culture
Yes the interns all got on really well, even ones in different departments, will definitely stay in touch and have been on lots of events with the interns. This is important as many of us were far from home and didn't know many other people in the area.
The area was fairly expensive, especially Reigate, the most middle class town ever. However, this was expected and TW provide accomodation expenses which are greatly appreciated and very usefuly if you are in an expensive area.
Jay Jay Whispers is the greatest club ever, they charge outrageous prices for drinks but who can blame them, it is like drinking the nectar of the gods. There is no point in visiting any of the other establishments in Reigate when you can visit Jay Jay's and see star celebrities like Proudlock from Made in Chelsea and others from Made in Chelsea.
Loads of oppourtunites to socialise and get involved in sports, we played in lots of competitions while we were here, with me even winning the TW rounders tournament, a glorious moment in my sporting career. Lots of socials including a boat trip down the Thames and a trip to the Oval!
