The Role
I was genuinely not expecting to learn so much and to be around people so willing to give up their time. There were lots of "training courses" at the beginning of the internship and the opportunity to undertake some meaningful work later on.
It was clear from the outset that everyone was treated equally and I really do think there was a culture whereby people were trying to help each other rather than just concerned with themselves.
Guidance was always very readily available when needed. My team leader was highly approachable and made sure I was supported in my various tasks.
This varied but generally I had a good amount of work to be getting on with. This was an internship where you could make as much of it as you liked.
The very rigorous checking procedure meant that you were never given too much responsibility. This doesn't mean that the work itself was not meaningful.
The training and exposure to actuarial work definitely helped with the financial courses I've taken this term and I imagine the skills developed will prove very useful in my future career.
The Company
The internship was very well managed. Talking to some of the other interns at other offices, it sounds like the London internship was by far the best in this regard.
I couldn't really have expected much more - there were various formal sessions at the beginning of the internship and constant training within my team.
Company Parties/Events
Overall a highly enjoyable experience and one that I would very much recommend.
The Culture
I think this varied between departments.
I was working in central London, so the nightlife was great but quite expensive.
There were various opportunities but again this seemed to vary on the department.
