About You
I generally enjoyed the scheme.
Although there were a few instances where I did work that I felt no one would put to good use, I generally received quite a bit of responsibility and performed tasks that trainees would otherwise have completed.
All of my supervisors went out of their way to explain what they did, provide me with work and give me feedback. I also had an informal mentor, who was there to answer any and all questions.
The vacation scheme gave me a real insight into life at a City law firm, allowing me to realise that I want to be a commercial solicitor.
The Company
The graduate recruitment team did a great job organising the vacation scheme. There was a great balance of work, workshops, exercises and social events.
Everyone -- including other vacation scheme students and the lawyers at the firm -- was extremely friendly.
The firm organised a variety of formal training sessions, including a research training session and a session on how to deliver presentations, which was organised by an external advisor. The firm also put together a variety of workshops to introduce us to different practice areas.
Both the work that I got involved with and the people I spoke to provided me with a real insight into what it would be like to have a full time role with Hogan Lovells.
I quickly learned that Hogan Lovells is an incredibly friendly firm.
Particularly the work that I got involved with helped me decide that I want to be a commercial solicitor.
Everything Else
I received £300 per week. Lunches and dinners were also often provided, which meant that I had very few expenses.
Whilst at Hogan Lovells, I met very many employees of the firm from all different levels. However, I felt that partner contact could have been better -- especially whilst sitting in my different departments.
Hogan Lovells organised a number of drinks receptions, a bowling event, a dragon boat racing event, a dinner at the Ivy, and various partner lunches. All of these events were really fun!
We had a talk on the firm's pro bono activities, and we also learned about some of Hogan Lovells' networks during a separate talk.
During the vacation scheme at Hogan Lovells, I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people, get involved with the work that the firm does, prepare a client pitch together with other vacation scheme students, and, more generally, learn about life as a commercial solicitor. It was an invaluable experience.
