The Role
I travelled quite a lot to client site during my internship and for the person who enjoys going around, it might be a great opportunity. It is definitely a matter of luck as to which departement an intern is allocated to. Some always stay outside M25 whilst I tend to stay aroud central london.
I reckon it depends on the project one comes across. I took very early responsibility from the right beginning and did quite a lot of substantial work for clients. However, I heard from other interns that work can be quite routine if one hasn't done anything related to accounting before. Reviewing loads of minutes can be mundane.
The managers I came across were utterly friendly and supportive. I particularly enjoyed having a chat after work which always gave me a lot of insights in the industry and the firm itself.
I really enjoyed the work-life balance in KPMG. I hanged out with a manager after work for a pint which was quite surprising to me considering I was just an intern.
I was responsible for the work usually done by the first and second year graduates. It meant I did have to be focussed and absorbed the instructions and jargons very quickly.
I think the internship is a platform for us to understand how it feels like working full time. Before we get qualified, it is always hard to get our hands on very technical stuff; but it is the feeling of working with other managers and partners that counts the most.
The Company
Usually interns in kpmg will stay in client site, so it is not ideal to rate the atmosphere in office. However, generally it is quite laid back and people tend to go for tea and coffee from time to time. People around you do like to talk to interns though.
I was surprised how little I actually hanged out with other interns. It was because we were based in different locatons and it is hard to gather all of us for an event, though I would recommned some social events in between.
We had a training at the beginning in Bristol and stayed in Hilton, which should cost a hefty amount for plenty of us.
Subsidised Canteen
We did have exit interviews for grad roles.
The Culture
We didnt really hang out with other placement students, so not much to mention here.
Well cost of living is always high in London, not to mention socialising.
London nightlife. You know it well!
there were opportunities to do some voluntary work, but they wook place after my placement.
