The Role
I have really enjoyed the internship.
I felt that the work I did was valued, however I felt that people were reluctant to hand over work as they did not know if we would understand it.
We were assigned a buddy who would provide us with work, and help us settle in to the office. Unfortunately, my buddy was away for a large portion of the internship. Our manager was always available for us to talk to.
There was a lot of time when I was unable to find work, but we were given some market research tasks to help keep us busy. We also had our corporate social responsibility project to work on, and this helped to fill time.
Once we had learnt how to do some of the calculations we could work through them on our own, and the knowledge that someone would check them after took the pressure off. Also, at times we were responsible for finding work to do.
The training does not directly apply to my degree, however if I do follow a career as an actuary it will provide some background to the area. Also, this is my first experience of working in an office and I feel that this is helpful.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly, and they did take an interest in making the interns feel welcome. The social events in the first few weeks allowed us to meet everyone outside of the office, and this was helpful for getting to know people.
The induction days were well organsised. Apart from the lack of work, the office was well set up for the internship as the interns were sat at desks throughout the office and this meant that we were able to learn more on the job.
We were invited to and encouraged to attend all of the training seminars that were held at the office, which showed us another side of the job. Also, we were trained in how to do some of the more simple calculations.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
We have had midway through the internship feedback from some of the people that we have worked with, and will receive some more at the end of the internship, but there hasnt been much indication about out employment prospects.
The Culture
Yes, there were a few social events throughout the internship. Also, some days the interns arranged to meet after work.
I lived at home during my internship, but had to commute to work everyday and travel was very expensive. The cost of socialising was quite expensive, however there were normally some deals in the pubs.
The nightlife isn't the best, however most the social events were in the day or after work and there are a few pubs to choose from. Also, for people that live here, it is very easy to get to London on the train and this would provide more nightlife.
There was a game of rounders organised while we were there, and also a few pubs visits that we were invited to. There was also the option to play five a side football twice a week, and a few chances to play cricket.
