Sales & Marketing Intern Review

I enjoyed my placement here. As with any internship, there were challenges and moments of boredom, but in all I think SL welcomed me within my role, trained me and helped me to contribute within the workplace.

This depended as I only seemed to interact with the people sitting nearest to me in the office. They were very friendly, supportive of my questions and willing to give advice about different area. Other members of my team were friendly when I talked to them, but didn't really get to know me. As a team we had relatively few socials, but I think that was an exception within the company.

Weekly 1:1 meetings kept me on track. My manager was very supportive and friendly, taking the chance to give me general advice about the career alongside checking on my progress in my role.

This depended. The workload varied and ranged from being very busy at the beginning of the internship to having relatively little to do at the end. Some of my tasks were really interesting, but others could equally be tedious and boring.

I was given responsibility for quite a few tasks over my placement. However, while some tasks definitely contributed to the work of the team, I wasn't so sure about others. One problem linked to being given lots of small tasks meant that I had no great responsibility for any larger project, making it harder to have an input in the bigger picture.

A first experience of working in a corporate environment was great and will be valuable for my CV. I now feel far more confident in my prospects for employment after my degree and opportunities within marketing. Less expected too was the chance to learn a lot about personal finance, investing, saving and being proactive with money, which I think will become really useful when I graduate and start to manage a salary.

Very silent, but people did chat sometimes.

HR was very helpful, supportive throughout the application process and on-hand throughout the internship to provide us with learning sessions and advice.

We had regular lunchtime learning sessions for a free lunch and the chance to learn about an area of the business once a fortnight. Interns in other departments got the opportunity to travel to training courses in other cities, although this wasn't the case for us in marketing.

The graduate scheme at SL looks great with lots of opportunities to sample different areas of the business over four 6 month placements. Whether or not I'd accept a job with them depends only upon my own career plans.

There was a great social scene among the interns and we often met up for drinks as well as going on trips to Glasgow, etc. The social scene among colleagues depended on the team and, although my team went out for lunch sometimes, I would have liked us to have had more social events.

I'm already a student in Edinburgh and socialising can be cheap if you know where to go. Accomodation's free, but the Fringe Festival can be expensive if you're planning to see lots of shows.

There are lots of bars and clubs around the place, but Edinburgh isn't the best city for nightlife.

Yes, but it was difficult to find out about them. Some of the other interns joined a sports team, but I didn't.
