The Role
Fantastic, given real work and exposure, contact and time with all levels and areas of the business. Living in Edinburgh is a great experience as well.
Always included in team talks and socials, and plenty of time set aside for me to settle in and join.
At the beginning lots of meetings and talks, always answered questions, so once I'd built sufficient knowledge could be more self-sufficient as supervisors got busy for the year end.
Great range of people to talk too, meetings and ad-hoc additional bits of work from team, along with a main project running through the internship giving me the chance for lots of independent thought and interactions.
The onus for meeting people and the experiences was on ourselves, but with full support- what you put in is what you get out, and that philosophy applies for responsibility as well.
Taught a lot beyond degree- how to work in a large bvut friendly corporate environment and self-sufficiency living in a new city- Standard Life provide accomodation which is a great help!
The Company
People always have time for you, entertaining and friendly
The assessment centre process was the best I've been through- it was a great signal from the start and that impression has carried through into the internship with line manager, stream head, buddies and paths set out for us, along with flexibility to make our own paths.
They've really provided us with all access, full time employee + experiences, with intern training sessions, and particularly for the actuarial scheme time with the most senior actuaries to understand the scope of the company and profession.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
They've looked after us and made us feel so welcome, and given us real and stimulating work- job offers should be revealed just after we finish but very positive signals given from the start
The Culture
Always a good laugh, and we ate lunch together every day, there was a reasonable sized group of interns so we always had people to talk too and get to know well
Accomodation was paid for- its like any student living costs beyond that- there's a lot of student deals, just don't go to tourist honey spots during the festival
Edinburgh, and the fringe- need I say more, its buzzing
A lot in the city, and several at work- but to get fully engaged with work clubs would be better to be here full time
