Accounting Intern Review

I really enjoyed my placement, there were lots of other interns for different departments starting at the same time which gave you the opportunity to meet new people and ones your age. I also feel that the level of work and the environment I was in allowed me to gain real life experience in the industry and an insight into what working within the company would be like.

On entering the team everyone was very welcoming and made an effort to support me, offering to answer questions I had. Furthermore was invited along to a lot of meetings allowing me better insight into what goes on within the company and how the monthly process work and fit into one another.

They were always on hand, meaning I could ask them questions as when they arose. I felt there was a realistic expectation of what my abilities would be, being my first time working within an accounting environment.

There were busier spells and quieter spells, however wasn't given too much work that there was an unrealistic expectation, at the same generally had enough work or could always ask for more to do, to prevent feeling at a loose end

At first the level of responsibility was moderate, mainly completing the work of the team, given a lot of guidance and support by the team in completing it. Then after I was given more responsibility as tasks were delegated to me.

Helped me gain an understanding what working within the industry is really like, and how challenging and rewarding it can be. Has allowed me to learn more about the variety of roles in accountancy and helped me make my mind of what area I would like to work in when I graduate. Leaving my placement with valuable skills such as better excel skills and communication skills.

The team had a good relationship with each other, however due to the nature of the work, deadlines had to be met, which means there had to be a balance of office banter and getting the job done.

It is an established work placement having run for several years, the recruitment and HR processes were all extremely organised.

If you perform in the internship, there is the opportunity of a graduate job, where they will put you through your professional exams. During the grad job you will do a series of 6 month secondments meaning you gain a wider knowledge of different departments and what roles they perform

There is a real opportunity for interns for interns to be employed as graduates (providing they achieve a 2:1) however since I haven't yet completed my placement I haven't awarded full stars as have not yet found out if I have been successful.

The company co-ordingated all their internships to be at the same time, meaning there was an intern orientation, since everyone was in the same boat it made it easier to make friends. furthermore the current graduates organised a lot of nights out and social events to get everyone together, afterwhich we organised our own.

As it was edinburgh city centre there was a variety depending what you were looking for, for example you could go out to more student places have cheaper nights out, or go somewhere fancier if you chose to

As mentioned in the above comment, there was a lot of choice, furthermore my placement also ran over the edinburgh fringe which meant there was even more to do.

There were probably extra activities to get involved in, however you would need to activly look for these.
