The Role
The internship at Aon was an enjoyable experience where you meet many new work colleagues and clients and this can only be helpful if you were to be employed in the future whether that be at Aon or not.
My colleagues valued you me and treated me as one of the team. Of course not straight away, but once the systems had been mastered, it was easy to get on with and work could be handed over accordingly.
The 'buddy' does listen to any questions you have. I wouldn't ask 100s of questions as that would be annoying but they are there to help and in most cases, very supportive. The manager was very easy to speak to if you had problems/questions.
This varied on day to day, which some days being very busy yet others being very quiet. Joining at the busy time of the year may not have been best, but the internship has to start in the summer some time.
Perhaps not too much but what can you expect as a 2 month intern. I was given work as it came about and had to improvise on quieter days. The charity project was a responsibilty but at times it could have got in the way of other work.
The time spent here has been a valuable one and one where the skills learnt about insurance and the day to day life of office life can certainly set you up for a career in the city. Overall, very valuable.
The Company
We went out as a team now and again and that was always enjoyable. But when there was important work to be done, that came first and rightly so.
One negative of the whole experience. It seemed as it had only been put together on the morning of the arrival in the office. They were expecting someone else, then nobody, then only on the morning did they expect me. Still, I was warmly welcomed.
There were training days at the start which helped the newcomers and this was vitally needed with people with zero insurance background. I aided a co-worker and he helped me where needed and he certainly invested plenty of time in me.
We shall see as it is hard to second guess before any offer has come in but one can always be hopeful. 75% of interns did get an offer in 2012 so there is reason to be cheerful.
The Culture
Could do better. One lunch/dinner on the first day with 2 bottles of beer. I feel if more was invested here, the interns could have got closer and built better relationships. Always good fun in the city though, especially during happy hours.
London, so always expensive. Play your cards right and you may get a few deals here and there but you have to search for them. The cost of travel was London TFL prices, so had to be expected before accepting the job.
Decent, plenty of pubs, bars and clubs to frequent. It is what you made of it yourself. Of course you could go out every evening but that would not do wonders for your liver, or your wallet!
A few, always an offer of a drink towards the end of the week. Was invited to play golf with a few colleagues. That was an enjoyable day, shame about my swing. But it was good to meet people from other departments.
