The Role
Loved it - Very friendly and intelligent people who care about their job and always willing to help you out. Social side of work is also very good.
My team took a real interest in my work and seemed to value my opinion despite my level of experience. Despite being busy they are always approachable and want to help you at any time.
Feedback/Help is always there for you and everyone is always supportive... If you really want specific feedback best asking for it.
Working specifically for certain funds keeps you very busy....you can never know enough.. But it is the good side of busy...the work is very interesting.
You get given as much as you want so it's up to you to be proactive. So you won't feel out of your depth I felt like I had lots of responsibility and they give you a lot of autonomy to call/meet with people from outside M&G to help you in your job.
The placement certainly has helped me review/analyse businesses/industries in a new manner. It has helped me to remove any pre-bias and look at things objectively to ensure my opinions are clear and not subjective. Sounds simple but I think this is crucial in the role I did. Developed some financial analysis techniques specific to equities and got introduced to various industries/sectors, fund investment approaches etc. Maybe more useful for future jobs than uni.
The Company
People are very driven at M&G but that is the nature of the industry and this does not mean they aren't friendly/supportive. I always found that the balance between the two is very good. It is a very inclusive environment and if you want to go to meetings normally its fine to ask and join even if it isn't directly linked to your role.
Well organised. I met with my team before I joined for a lunch. Then on first day you will meet your line manager/fund manager and he will introduce you to the floor/team. Then I had a week long handover with another intern. HR organise events (e.g flower show/drinks) for you to go to. You get feedback/reviews at certain points.
My team really pushed me to meet as many people from M&G to CEO/CFOs during my time as possible in order to learn as much as possible from all perspectives. They provide you with all the data packages/info you need to do your role and will show you how to use them to fulfill your job. I went out to Bloomberg to learn about their systems.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
They are very supportive of their interns applying to the graduate scheme and you can take the final steps during the internship/placement. But its down to your performance as well.
The Culture
Social events/drinks occur a reasonable amount and so you get to know everyone quite well both inside and outside the office. Most of my social stuff was based within my team and they get on extremely well together. I went for quite a few drinks. Several team meals to top places and bowling once. HR took me to the royal flower show with drinks/lunch before and after. And the summer party was on whilst I was there too.
I lived West/Central London which is always going to be expensive. But just make sure you know that before you rent.
Lots of very nice pubs/bars. Clubs never too far away
Yeah. I finished work at 6pm normally...very occasionally later. And I never worked a weekend. So plenty of opportunities to do stuff outside of work.
