The Role
I found that I gained experience in the field of Oil & Gas and how Civil Engineering relates to the discipline. This has allowed me to go into my 2nd year of university with valuable knowledge regarding organisation and how to relate what I learn to a real world situation
Everyone I spoke to was really helpful and if I didn't have much work, I could always ask for more. My supervisor was really friendly and introduced me to everyone, while also helping me out if I had a problem with the work I was given, administration, or just in general.
Although they were incredibly busy, they still found the time to look after me and provide me with work if I needed more to do. They also told me about working environment I was in and it was nice to be in a place where you could work and also have a laugh or two along the way.
Because Atkins works on a project basis, most weeks were full of things to do. I mostly worked on report searches and data analysis as I wasn't at the stage where I could perform technical analysis on the structures. Never the less, I had enough work to get me through the week, and when I didn't I was able to write a summary report on my experience with Atkins Oil & Gas
I was given a lot of free reign with what I could do and when. The hours were flexible so I could fit my Atkins work around my other commitments. I was also able to draft some technical reports on the data analysis I performed.
I can go in my 2nd year with experience in real life situations and with a goal of returning to Atkins to work in a different department as I want to see what else they have to offer. The organisation and analysis I performed will allow me to keep on top of my coursework and prepare for my exams
The Company
You could get on with the work but have a friendly conversation at the same time. The office layout allowed you to feel part of a team
I had a few issues with login details and inductions but once everything was settled, my placement went quite smoothly
I couldn't go on any training courses as I was only a summer student and was only in the office for 2 months. However, I gained experience my talking to people around the office and so I achieved an insight into the world of Oil & Gas
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
As Atkins is a leading design and consultancy engineering company, I was immediately hooked. Now that I know the people behind the company name, I am even more determined to become part of the team.
The Culture
My fellow summer students and office team were all welcoming and we always had a laugh. When the day was dragging along, we would all have a break and go for some ice cream or cake. There was always a reason to celebrate.
London is usually expensive anyway, but with the services provided by Atkins such as the canteen. There is little to worry about.
We all had a great time on the Summer Social and every Friday the team go to pub after a weeks work, its a friendly environment and I guess if you are around the right people, you will always have a good time.
There was always something going on, from socials to competitions and many other outside the box activities
