The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement. My line manager and other work colleagues were able to give me interesting and varied tasks which challenged me. The office has a relaxed working environment and I would consider applying to Atkins in the future.
I feel the work that I did was beneficial to my work colleagues. Although sometimes not particularly challenging I understood that the work had to be done and by me completing it, it allowed my colleagues to finish their tasks quicker. My colleagues made it known to me if I had successfully completed a task and that they appreciated it.
Throughout my placement my line manager has been assessing my performance and my overall aims for what I want to achieve from the placement. He has tried to allocate me tasks that match my interests and has given me time to attend training courses and work on personal development.
My productivity throughout my placement has varied. Depending on tasks available sometimes I had several tasks at the same time, other times there was very little available for me to do. However when tasks were not available I was able to use Atkins resources to carry out research for my final year project. I was also able to practice using computer software.
I haven't had a lot of responsibility. A lot of the tasks I did were necessary, however it would be checked and developed further by another work colleague, so the work I did was rarely the final thing.
I have gained a good insight into the engineering industry and have learnt the relevant skills I need to be an engineer. The internship has given me the opportunity to apply and expand my existing knowledge. I have practiced using computer software which will assist me with my final year at university. I have learnt new project management skills and how to present technical reports which is useful knowledge I can apply to my final year.
The Company
The Atkins office had a relaxed but professional atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly and are always willing to help. If things get too stressful there is a games room to chill out!
As Atkins is an engineering consultancy firm the type of work changes frequently. This meant that Atkins couldn't organise a schedule for the 10weeks. This meant at times I was searching for work to do.
Atkins payed for me to have computer software on my work computer so that I could practice and develop my skills. They also allowed me to attend training skills within the office building.

National Travel
I think I have been able to demonstrate my potential within the company and therefore hopefully stand a better chance of gaining a place on the graduate scheme.
The Culture
I was able to join the sports and social club for £2 a month which meant I could play in Atkins sport teams and get reduced tickets to Atkins work dos and activities. These activities were very popular with the staff and I have attended many of the events and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
I think I was very lucky with the housing I got in Bristol. It was in a great location for a very good price. Though other summer students who also rented accommodation managed to rent similar costing properties. I was pleasently surprised!
I lived in Cotham which is a student area. Very busy area with lots going on. Lots of bars and walking distance to the centre. Awesome place! I'd recommend Cotham to anyone!
If you're interested in sport then there is an activity every night to get involved with. If you don't like sport then there isn't much except from the odd weekend away or work social event.
