About You
Worked alongside a good number of other vacation students. All employees encountered were very friendly. Excellent social events organised. Work interesting and informative.
Given work to do which was very often the work that actual trainees are otherwise entrusted with. Invited to meetings and to sit in on calls, and their context was explained.
Sitting with associates who took the time to explain relevant law and practice to you. Placement organised by graduate recruitment, who took care to ensure that everything was going well.
Very different to the academic study of law, and so I would not say that the placement is of huge help to my degree studies. It is very useful however in helping you decide whether or not this is the job for you.
The Company
Given time in different departments, and we were allocated a 'trainee buddy' in each department, as well as sitting with an associate. This allowed you to see how different levels of lawyers work. Various talks and great social events organised throughout the placement.
Very friendly employees. The atmosphere varies from department to department, according to (inter alia) how busy they are - but people do not stop benig friendly. Other fun vacation scheme students and social events meant that the right balance was struck between serious work and fun.
Associates took the time to explain legal background of particular work, and to give us real work.
Given work that actual trainees do. Sitting with an associate so can also see the type of work that they do.
Meeting employees and actually working at a firm is the best way to understand the company culture.
It gives a very accurate representation of what it is like to be a (trainee) solicitor.
Everything Else
Details on the amount that Baker & McKenzie pays its summer clerks is available on their website.
Trainees took part in social events, and there were other opportunities, including lunch with the managing committee of the London office.
Great fun! Pizza-making, bowling, kareoke, great meals and always plently of beverages to quench your thirst. Friendly trainees who took an active part was a big positive.
Not given lots of info directly, but we had lots of opportunities to talk to trainees about anything we wanted. We were given a talk on how Bakers employees participate in CSR schemes.
Very much so.
