    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship at BDO had a good structure and was very organised. I worked in the Manchester office and had a great counselling manager who looked after me and two other interns for the 6 weeks. The work was varied and if you were particularly interested in something, it was possible to get more work within that area. The office atmosphere was fairly relaxed and I got a good feel of what a career in Tax would be like.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My managing counsellor was very welcoming and made me and the other interns feel part of the firm. Obviously there were a few people who didn't acknowledge us or appreciate the work we did but there will always be those people in every company. Generally, most of the people were polite but not overly friendly, although I think that is the norm for accountancy firms.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a great manager who made sure I always had work to do and gave me help whenever I needed it. I didn't feel intimidated to ask for help as he was very forth coming and helpful. For these reasons, I learn't a lot over the course of the internship. I was also given a buddy who was a graduate trainee at BDO, and she sat close by to help me on little problems or guidance whenever needed.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was pretty busy, if I needed work then I could ask for more and if I had too much there was no pressure to complete it all, I was able to tell my manager and he would sort it out.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Not much responsibility was given, although I expected this because I have no experience or qualifications in tax, it would be irresponsible for me to deal with clients etc. I was able to go to a few client meetings which were interesting and this is probably the most responsibility I was given.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I received a lot of training for Tax and many lectures about different areas in the firm to give me an understanding of the future careers possible. I developed all of the standard skills of working in a professional firm.
