The Role
Really enjoyed it, nice friendly work environment and never really felt pressured or treated differently to the permanent staff there.
Felt really valued within my team. I also felt valued by members of other teams I worked with.
Support and guidance provided by my supervisor when I didn't know what to do. Would have been nice to go on some training.
There were was a total of maybe 3-4 weeks out of the 14 months were I was slightly bored since there wasn't much work for me to do or I was given work I didn't enjoy too much. I don't think I was ever too busy or given more work than I could handle.
At the start of the year I wasn't given much responsibility, but I had expected that. Around 4-5 months in I was the technical point of contact for one of the applications. Around 8-9 months in I was the technical point of two applications. in the last 2 months of my placement my supervisor took a sabbatical resulting in a colleague and myself being left as the technical points of contact for 14 applications, reporting to a temporary supervisor. I was given more responsibility than I would have expected when I started my placement.
I believe my technical knowledge has improved and I have learnt to apply my knowledge to the real world. I have also developed valuable team working, organisational and communication skills. I believe all this skills will aid me during my final year of my degree and in the future.
The Company
Really friendly atmosphere and everyone was approachable
Well organised induction for Graduates/placement employees in the first week. There were events for graduates which placement students were invited to, but there was nothing specific for placement students. I was supposed to have a 'buddy' from another department which I was only in contact with once.I didn't feel like a placement student which I actually preferred. Maybe having an event for all placement students half way through the placement may be something which could be considered.
The only training I was in was at the induction which introduced us into the company with a few team exercises. Then I only had a career development review with my supervisor.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
I'd definitely consider future employment with the company in the future.
The Culture
There wasn't another placement student in my department but a few throughout the company which I kept in contact with and went to socials with.
Company events were paid for. Some team socials were paid for, but mainly paid by us. Living was quite expensive and so were nights out.
Being a student town it was quite lively.
The company had several clubs available. I joined the Football Social Club in Guildford which I attended regularly.
