The Role
Really enjoyed the whole experience of my placement year, met so many great people and learnt so much
The whole atmosphere within the department was great, I was made to feel like a part of the department rather than just the 'student'
I was assigned a mentor and had constant communication with my manager and if I ever needed help with anything then anyone in the department was willing to help.
Due to the nature of the work and business there were some slow days, but then the majority of the time we were extremely busy which required plenty of overtime.
I really enjoyed the challenge of the responsibility. Running jobs for important customers and given jobs like any other of the engineers. I didn't really feel like the student a lot of the time
I think the main skills I developed was communication skills not only to customers, but also within the department to colleagues. There was also the technical skills of running all of the jobs.
The Company
Everyone in the office and lab was great. Always a great atmosphere, couldn't imagine it better anywhere else
Due to the placement being organised by Vauxhall it was quite confusing and the Millbrook people were pushed a bit to the side. But now everything is run by Millbrook it seems far better.
There was a lack of external training due to not wanting to spend the money on students. But internal training was great with various courses such as hazard awareness, driver training, overhead crane training etc.
Sports and Social Club
Have been 'fast-tracked' to a graduate assessment centre. Many undergraduates return as graduates.
The Culture
Was always opportunities to go out with other placement students. Was also socialising outside of work with my department
Had an amazing house for the year that is always for undergrads. Was cheap too!
Was ok from the few bits I saw
Sports and social club organise subsidised events. All other activities were organised independent of work
