The Role
The work was enjoyable and appropriately challenging, but was partly just thrown together to keep us busy. With that said, I accept that given the nature of the business, it's pretty impossible to have a 12 week intern give any value to a project in that time frame.
Some of the kindest, most decent folk I've had the pleasure of meeting. They really took the time to look after us.
My work 'buddy' really went out of his way to give us all the help I could possibly need, and my line manager wouldn't check up on me but would always gladly talk me through problems if i went to see him.
'Flexy Time' was really useful to make sure I had plenty of time in the working day to get done what I needed.
I'm only half way through as I write this, but so far only one project has been more than a learning exercise for interns. There is one large Market Assessment that does have value to the company that we are helping to do though.
I don't feel I learnt anything entirely new skills that you wouldn't pick up form group project work at University, but certainly improved all of them (communication, handling deadlines, being a leader, etc.) I did however learn an awful lot about the organisation of UK Defence, which will be invaluable if that's the business I decide to go into.
The Company
The only quiet moments were because it was summer so a lot of people were on holiday. I'm sure any other time of year this would be a straight 10.
Never had nothing to do, we were well looked after and well informed on all accounts.
Gave me all they had. Any opportunity, they went out of their way to get me involved if they thought it would be beneficial. I'm very grateful for that.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Car
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
I could definitely see myself working there, it's a great place to start and engineering career with a great chartership program and a wide variety of projects to get involved with.
The Culture
Everyone was incredibly friendly, pro-active and there was a formal social group that organised an open bar BBQ for us. I'm gutted I won't be around for the infamous Christmas Party!
Pretty expensive I though, but it does have a large student population so I'm sure there are good deals if you know the area well.
Bristol has plenty going on, again, it's a very student area where I was.
Aside from going to the free gym I didn't really.
