The Role
I really enjoyed working at BlackRock. The people are friendly, the work is interesting, and you have access to opportunities that I genuinely do not believe you would have at any other company - I met with two FTSE 100 CEOs during my stay there, as well as frequently meeting senior managers.
The people at BlackRock are very friendly and do not attempt to pile boring work on you, but rather try to give you work that will help them in their jobs and that will help you to develop.
Guidance was usually very good. Managers would be willing to sit with me for 20-30 minutes every other day to discuss my progress. One thing I would say is that you often have to push to make sure that this happens, as it is not always easy to get people's time as they are very busy. But with a prod here and there, it was more than enough support.
Quite busy, not least because BlackRock were very keen that you attend a lot of meetings, both in your own team and in others, so one has to manage one's time carefully.
Quite a lot - I was being asked to review positions for the team and generate ideas that they would then use to feed into their own analysis.
The analytic, accounting, and financial valuation techniques that i have learned will, I am sure, be very helpful to me going forward.
The Company
BlackRock is a very high-powered firm, so people are very busy. When people did take a quick break, I did find them to be very good fun.
Overall, well organised. There is a well-planned training week and a rotation to make sure you get exposure to different teams within the firm.
There was a lot of soft-skills training - presentation work and the like. However, I would say there was less technical training than at other big financial corporations.
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
The firm does not intend to hire all its interns - I would guess it anticipates hiring about half of them.
The Culture
Yes, made several good friends who I would frequently see outside of work.
Central London is very expensive; that's the reality of any job in finance.
The City itself is not great for going out, but you are near plenty of better areas of London.
There were some opportunities to get involved with charitable work.
