The Role
Intense, exciting work atmosphere.
Colleagues treated me with respect and were always willing to help where necessary.
My supervisor was clear in setting goals for my internship and helping me to execute on them.
Definitely a lot going on all the time, but it was manageable.
Once assigned a task, I was given the freedom and flexibility needed to execute it in my own manner, but ultimately delivering the desired product.
Hugely increased my knowledge of excel and PPT (valuable skills) and learned a great deal about modelling and producing a DCF, LBO and precedent comps valuations.
The Company
The atmosphere you will experience will depend greatly upon which specific team you are assigned within the investment bank. My team was very upbeat and valued time off on the weekends--it was a more pleasant experience than some other teams.
You will be assigned certain tasks, but much of the work is left up to you to decide how to carry it out. This is important, since this is a more realistic portrayal of how your work would be as an analyst. However, if you do get stuck, there will normally be someone on your team who can help you.
We had a week-long training session at the beginning of the program which went over some IB and accounting basics. This was somewhat helpful. Most of the training and development occurred within the team, where I was given one-on-one instruction by some of the first-year analysts.
Roughly 70-80% of interns were granted an offer with the firm. Most took the offer. It offers a rigorous first job experience, with great pay and benefits and exceptional exit opportunities if you find you don't quite want to work in IB your whole life.
The Culture
The interns got along amongst ourselves very well and we were able to engage in many social activities with full-time analysts. It is a very good atmosphere.
London is very expensive.
It's London--the nightlife is amazing. But expensive.
There are a lot of opportunities to get involved in community activities, but as an analyst you won't have time for it.
