The Role
I was really apprehensive about the internship but actually I've really really enjoyed the experience and have decided that this is an organisation that I would love to pursue a career in.
Initially I was really worried about the type of people the corporate environment can foster as I'm quite a chilled and friendly person. However my team were absolutely amazing, they were so supportive with everything that I did and I really did feel like a part of the team rather than just an intern.
My manager worked in the office 3 days a week and was always willing to give up his time to provide support and guidance, they were also contactable via email, telephone and IM when they worked from home. We had weekly hour long meetings on a Friday which was a great time for them to provide feedback and for me to ask any questions. I honestly couldn't have asked for more from my manager. They went above and beyond any necessary means to ensure that I was comforatable with the work I was doing in the office and also knew that if I ever had any problems outside of work (as I moved to the area temporarily on my own for the duration of the internship) then they were happy to help.
I think the workload was pretty much perfect - there was enough work to do without feeling bogged under. The only thing I struggled with was waiting for people to get back to me with information which left me feeling like I was treading water with my project however this wasn't really anything to do with the nature of the internship but just how it sometimes is in the corporate environment when working in project management.
I managed a workstream of a larger project that had real impact on the business.
I can honestly say that I learnt more in the 10 weeks with Amex than I have at any point in my last 4 years of education.
The Company
Work hard, play hard! I was really worried when I first arrived that I would have to put on a front and behave in a coporate manner, the atmosphere isn't like this at all! Obviously Amex want you to get the work done, but at the same time they want you to be yourself and be comfortable in the office environment.
Always knew where I needed to be and when - also attended some brilliant events as part of the scheme which again were organised brilliantly. The only thing I would say is that the contact leading up to the start of the internship was a little thin - it all worked out ok in the end but I can remember being a little confused about the induction plans.
I couldn't have asked for anymore really. I had real influence in a real team and got to manage a project that led to a true business outcome, so many people invested time in my own development including my manager, director and the higher leadership team. Outside of the office, there was a large amount of investment in ensuring that we built a network as interns and had some down time. Listening to some of the experiences that friends have had as interns at other companies, I really think the investment in development that Amex provides is second-to-none.

The impression I get is that interns really do have a great chance of securing a job within the organisation.
The Culture
Amazing - we all got on really well so did things together in our own time however some of the events organised by the scheme really did foster a good social scheme between the interns.
Really quite expensive - I chose to have a flat on my own and that cost about £200 a week. Having said that, there are some great places in the area for eating out really cheaply, its all about exploring. Having said that the salary for interns is really competitive - swings and roundabouts really!
Renowned for having a good nightlife!
I think a lot of this was due to the scheme really encouraging interns to build a network which opened up a lot of opportunities.
