The Role
I absolutely loved my time at American Express. I loved my team – the projects I got to work on were interesting and I was given a high level of responsibility. The culture is fantastic at American Express - lots of people willing to share their insights with you and there’s a good work/life balance which is rare to see in any company. American Express also invested their time to hold social events for us which was a good opportunity to get to know the other interns.
Throughout my ten weeks at American Express, I really felt as if I was a part of my team. I wasn’t sidelined and just made to work on my project in the corner. My director involved me in all the responsibilities of the team. She also encouraged me to reach out to other team members and find out more on what they were working on.
My manager was really friendly and nice, even though she was super busy; she still made time for me and was available for when I had questions to ask. What I loved about American Express is the set up of having a weekly meeting with your manager to discuss your progress and any concerns.
I was occupied for a good amount of time during my internship, besides working on my individual project for the team, I was also brought into other tasks to see how the team works.
I was given a high level of responsibility during my internship and through that I have been able to gain an insight on what working in finance is really like.
My internship experience at American Express has given me valuable insights into a career in Finance and a network of contacts. It has also given me technical and interpersonal skills that I can carry forward into any graduate role.
The Company
Friendly and relaxing!
The internship was very well organised and HR was very easy to contact if we had any queries.
Within the first two days of starting the internship, we were given training on presentation skills and excel. Both of these training sessions became very useful later on in the internship. Also, within individal teams we had training on how to use certain software or databases that were related to your teams roles/responsibilities. Additionally, there were plenty of opportunities to network and learn more about different business units at American Express.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Lots of perks within American Express - working from home, summer flex days, holiday days but most importantly I learnt that when you join American Express offers sponsorships for qualifications such as ACA, CIMA, CFA.
The Culture
Lots of social events organised for the interns such as community, pizza making, seeing a musical and many more!
Since I study in London there was no noticeable difference working in London besides the cost of transport in peak times, but for that, I recommend getting a student travel card as it saves you loads. It’s true that London is not cheap to live in but for me, I really wanted to work in London because it’s a financial hub and I liked being in a city that is constantly busy.
There are many pubs nearby Victoria however being in London, it’s easy to get anywhere with the underground. Leicester Square and Camden Town are very good places to go for a good night out.
