The Role
Coming from a non-finance background this was a fantastic opurtunity to see how a financial instution operates, whilst gaining real on the job skills.
Most of the people you come across are super, very friendly and welcoming. In the beginning you aren't adding value as you don't have the skills but towards to the end you definitely start to feel valued.
The statement "There's never a dumb question" is pretty true. Most people are willing to give you the time of day to answer your questions. If they don't it's normally because they are mega-busy on something else and will happily schedule in some time with you.
Work in a pool means peaks an troughs of work. You'll have mega busy days, but equally you'll have quieter days when you can do training or work on your assessed task.
Again, didn't really have the skills to be given mountains of responsibility. Once skills were gained I was given the responsibilty of completing tasks by myself. But obviously these are still checked after!
As I said earlier, I come from a non-finance background. So what I learnt this summer won't be of particular use going into my final year at Uni (except for maybe the excel shortcuts). However, in terms of getting on the job finance experience it was priceless. It means wherever I end up working (in finance) I'll have a good skill set when entering analyst training.
The Company
Its an open plan office, so feels pretty library like at times.
Very well organised and structured. Good variety of events and talks.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Have my final review the day before I finish... so fingers crossed?!
The Culture
Drinks on a Friday is tradition. A lot of the interns go out in Mayfair etc... but that wasn't really my cup of tea. So encouraging Shoreditch expeditions proved a challenge.
Canary Wharf is EXPENSIVE. If you can live up in Bethnal Green / Mile End area. Socialising, again, it's London so it's expensive. But if you're smart you'll find more affordable places. Particularly for your first month and a bit until you get paid. As the money tends to be TIGHT!
Thursdays and Friday in the Wharf have a great buzz. But it tends to be just after work drinks etc. If you plan to go out out you'll want to head to the City.
My department was pretty quiet. Social Sec would've been a good idea, to promote Paintballing, Go Karting etc.
