The Role
I enjoyed my placement, I got given a wide range of jobs and responsibilities including a bridge assessment which I had to complete myself.
I was given tasks by almost all the team, partly because my rates are lower than theirs so I can do work cheaper.
I was shown everything I needed and if I had any questions I could ask at any time.
This varied depending on the tasks I was doing, long term projects were broken up by site visits and other smaller tasks and CAD work.
While I was given responsibility for an assessment, ultimately, the budget and main decisions were made by my supervisor. I also did a safety barrier assessment, but as with all engineering work, everything must be checked and approved before it can be issued.
I learnt many skills you just don't get taught in uni, my CAD skills have developed massively, I can use a finite element program, know how to do various types of assessment and understand project management a bit better. All skills that will be useful in my career and also things you just don't learn in uni.
The Company
Quiet at times but also everyone can talk to each other if needed.
Well organised, received contract docs in plenty of time, leaving process sorted early including a revised end date.
I was trained on various software packages and am also now lanyard trained.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my placement with Atkins, I wish to work in Australia, possibly in contracting so Atkins are not the right company to achieve this with, I would however recommend to anyone else looking to go into consulting.
The Culture
Several placement students, often chatting, and go for lunch, live in different areas so difficult to socialize outside work.
Average really, standard Cardiff prices. Didn't live in Cardiff.
Didn't go out from work but Cardiff is a good night out.
Dont think so, had a curry night, dont really know what this question is asking.
