The Role
Overall I got to learn and see a lot of the company and get a great overview, despite it being only 8 weeks to try to understand a huge company.
Overall my team made an effort to allow me to see as much of the department and the company as possible, and gave me a good amount of responsibility and support.
Occasionally members of my team including my line manager would be away on holiday or business for days and weeks at a time, and at times it seemed the department were unprepared for having an intern.
I had a good amount of work to complete as part of a project, and was given the time and support to complete it.
There were limitations to what work I could complete as an intern because of lack of expertise which was somewhat disappointing, but overall I felt that my work and opinions were being used by management and having an impact on the wider project.
In the short and fast 8 weeks at Tesco I've had an invaluable crash course in what life in the Head Office of a global retail company is like. Overall despite the challenges, I now feel much more prepared to start a career in either the same or a similar environment in the future.
The Company
People were friendly and down to earth, and when they had the time to spare, were more than willing to put in the time to talk to me.
Certain aspects were well organised but there were parts in between that reflected that some departments were not prepared to have an intern join them, in that there was a lack of work that could be completed by a new-starter.
I was given compliance training as part of the internship which taught me about the regulations of the job. I was also able to visit other parts of the business, such as stores and suppliers, to gain a better insight. Overall, I really appreciated not just sitting at a desk for the whole 8 weeks.
Subsidised/Company Gym
I aim to progress to a graduate scheme with the company.
The Culture
One of the best parts of the internship was how the personnel teams allowed interns across the company to meet each other and bond. I feel like I have made great friends during my time here.
Cost of living in the immediate area to the office is very reasonable, but moving towards London would be quite expensive.
No nightlife in the immediate area but a close proximity to London provided an ideal social scene.
Many social events were organised for the interns to get to know one another, and there were also social events within work teams.
