The Role
Lots of people were on the internship so it was a great opportunity to meet people and everyone was given responsibility from the start.
My team was very friendly and collaboration was encouraged. Tesco operates a flattened hierarchy so senior colleagues are easily approachable.
Everyone was happy to help when they weren't too busy.
You could always ask members of the team for more work to do and the project is always there for you to work on.
You are given a task that would have been completed by the team anyway and the tasks often involve close communication with external suppliers and companies so a lot of trust is put into the interns.
You gain a lot of Excel experience which helps with scientific research and undertaking a project over 8 weeks means you learn time management and organisational skills that are very useful in degree studies.
The Company
Everyone was friendly and enjoyed the frequent food freebies outside the canteen most days. One week we got a visit from Levi Roots.
Everyone had something to do though communication with Tesco can be difficult as the teams are very busy. During store placements, many of the stores weren't aware we were coming to visit but the HR team are working to rectify this for future years.
We had two weeks of training, both with all the interns and in our teams so everyone knew a lot about Tesco and about their divisions. The group food team went to visit suppliers in the first week and there is a three day store placement to learn more about the stores. There was a development day mid-placement to help develop confidence and presentation skills.
All the interns were impressed at how employees at Tesco were proud of the company they worked for and the current employees rarely had plans to move company as they enjoyed working for Tesco. At the time of writing, the interns are yet to know if they have received job offers.
The Culture
As you have many interns of a similar age, the interns get on really well and people make an effort to make sure everyone is included.
Cheshunt is reasonable but if you live in London it is expensive.
In London there is plenty of choice but it can come at a price.
There were the intern games were teams competed against each other each week in pictionary, board games, charity bake sales and mind games.
