The Role
I will value this placement probably for the rest of my life not just because I've worked with a great team and have interacted with true professionals, but I am greatful to Centrica for considering me for the role and actually giving me the opportunity to prove my true potential.
My role was mainly to support the team in everyday activities and further along as I proved my capabilities, I've been given more challenging projects to develop.
My manager and the team I worked in have been extremely helpful and supportive, willing to teach me so many things in such a short time. Soon after I started,we became closer and strengthened our relationships.
As an average, I would say 8, but there have been days where 10 would be more appropriate.
During the first week I've shadowed different people in my team and on the floor to get a better understanding of what was going on and what was expected of me. Then I became more reliable in terms of knowledge about the company and internal procedures and my responsibilities increased.
In terms of developing skills, during this rather short time (10 weeks) I think I developed more skills than I did in one year in university. Of course that going to university is a great thing and being on this internship is because I was doing really good in uni, but because I've been working on real cases that impacted the performance in the department immediately, this changes everything.
The Company
The atmosphere has always been friendly and the people around are always up for a chat either on work-related issues or just about last night's game. I even approached senior managers who have been happy to answer questions my questions or have a meeting on work-related matters.
The internship was fairly well organised. There have been some loose ends, but overall it was fine. I think I would have like more support from the graduate team as somethimes it was quite difficult to get in touch with them and actually get a response in due time.
The company offered us all the prerequisites to succeed. We were given the chance to attend Excel training sessions, a couching session on developing presentation skills, there was a Development Day where all interns participated at various team-building activities. All sessions were extremely useful and the Development Day was incredibly fun and helped us bond and build friendships.
Centrica is a great place to work because it offers many opportunities for professional development in various areas of the company; it is a company where I see myself working and hopefully I will get to be part of the Graduate Programme they offer. Being such a large corporation, Centrica would give me the chance to find the right role for me where I could reach my full potential.
The Culture
The company encouraged student interaction through the Development Day activities, during other activities that everyone attended and also my providing accommodation in such way that all students from a particular area would like very close.
I was based in Oxford and everything here is quite expensive; most of my socialising was based around the office, but we did go out from time to time.
Oxford offers a wide variety of places that make nightlife really enjoyable.
From my perspective, Oxford is a miniature version of London and it offers a bit of everything. Apart from working, I jogged and I signed up for dancing lessons. Also went frequently to ice skating. So planty of options to have fun and enjoy the summer.
