The Role
I really enjoyed this internship. I instantly felt accepted into the community and I was assigned to a project that I had a personal interest in. I felt as if the work I was doing was making a long term effect on the company.
I felt like an equal member of the team for the project. I know the work I've done will benefit the project in both the short and long term.
I knew I could ask my line manager about any problems I was having, but, at the same time, I felt trusted to get on with what I said I was doing, without having someone over my shoulder, watching what I did.
I was set task, which I worked on, until I finished, when I was set another. Working like this meant I always had something to do, but also meant I didn't have any pressure to do anything
Initially, I thought I was only going to be writing code. However, I was listening in to calls with customers, directly responding to support requests (without any supervision) and able to make suggestions regarding the long term direction of the project
As well as vastly improving my coding and team coding skills (especially with design patterns), I've learnt a lot about how a startup project is run, handling customer relations etc.
The Company
I've found something that made be laugh at least once per day. It might have been an amusing company-wide email, a Nerf gun fight or what was happening in my division.
Red Gate organised pretty much everything for us.
I felt my skills (especially regarding developing software in a team) were vastly improved over the internship.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I feel as if I applied for a job today, I would get one.
The Culture
As well as Red Gate organising events after work, there were many social activities during the day (and pub trips!)
Red Gate offered housing to us, which was quite cheap for Cambridge. In addition, there was a free lunch everyday and various social activities every week.
The nightlife was ok. Nothing special.
Red Gate has quite a few "clubs" of people who are interested in various hobbies.
