The Role
Work was great fun, help when I needed it. Only complaint is sometimes not having much to do and people not around to give me tasks
Work I did was important and contributed greatly to projects that lots of people were involved in. Was invited to all the team events, lunches, etc.
Pretty much always had support available with a simple skype chat or meeting. Sometimes people were away but there weren't many times that there wasn't anyone at all who could help
Work loads varied quite a lot, sometimes I was really busy fixing and testing many issues in one day. Other times I had little to do.
I was pretty much the head of the project I was working on, and it was a project designed to replace the current outdated back-end of many other projects.
I already knew a large amount of programming but a lot of my skills have been refined so I'm much better at organising code and ensuring correct memory usage and things like that. Working in a big group and having an influence on everyone was good, a lot of collaboration helped me get better at working in a team
The Company
A lot of the time it was serious but I could always chat to someone, or have a coffee break, and even the occasional play-around session with nerf guns.
It was really well organised and managed, all the interns and students got induction days and lots of information. Projects given to me were organised and the system explained a lot.
Lots of options for training, although in such a short placement and with the certain kinds of training available I didn't feel any was particularly necessary since it was mainly specific skills and paradigms
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
It was a great job, and I enjoyed it, but right now I don't see myself working in this part of the industry. I'm more into games design and programming than anything else. That may change though, and I certainly will apply for placements during my studies in the future
The Culture
There were lots of events and optional gatherings to attend, with a lot of things organised by students and specifically for students so they could meet up.
I've lived in the area all my life so nothing different to what I'm normally used to
Plenty to do and go out with friends when I wasn't busy
Plenty of events and optional meetings in evenings and things
