The Role
A throughly enjoyable 8 weeks in which I never once came into work not looking forward to it.
Was welcomed into the office from day one and made to feel part of the family.
My manager Dan Roberts was a fantastic help, always available to offer guidance and advice despite being extremely busy himself
I had a steady and constant flow of tasks to complete, all requiring different skill sets. However I didnt feel overloaded at any point, or that i was being taken advantage of to carry out menial tasks.
I was given an increasing amount of operational consusltant responsibilities as soon as my manager felt i had the required skills to carry out the tasks effectively.
I feel I could now contribute extremely well to a team in a professional environment. I also now realise the importance of individual goals and their effect on personal performance. In terms of specific skills, even if I pursue a career away from recruitment many of the things i learnt will benefit me in other lines of work.
The Company
Everyone is relaxed enough to chat and have a laugh in the office without you ever feeling judged for not working - they trust you to be working hard
Extremely well organised. Before the internship the internship coordinator, Sophie Mataba, was in constant contact and kept me fully updated about how my application was progressing; I couldn't have asked for anyone better. Once on the internship there was flexibility dependinf on your office, and your tasks were largely dictated by your manager.
A lot - my manager was always on hand to help me develop into the role and advise me on how best to go about different tasks. Also the 2 days intensive training at the start of the internship is invaluable, both in terms of providing you with the core skills needed for the role and with a level of confidence to perform well.
It seems as though if you complete the internship at Michael Page and perform well there is a very good chance of coming onto the graduate scheme. If you really excel there is even the chance of coming straight in as a consultant!
The Culture
I was the only person on an internship in my office so this is not really applicable, however i kept in touch with other interns who i'd met at training and were working in other areas of the country, and got on with all of them extremely well. Meeting up with them at the internship graduation day at the end of the 8 weeks was really good, and we shared a few drinks and compared experiences.
Cardiff is a cheap area to live. I go to university in the city though so it represented no extra cost to me as i was simply living in my uni house which i would have been renting anyway.
Cardiff's a great night out, simple as.
I played a game of football for Michael Page with the Bristol office. Although I did not experience one during my time, i hear the quarterly bashes are excellent. Also, through my circumstances I didnt go on any nights out with my office (most of my colleagues had young kids) but speaking to other interns it seems like there is a really good social scene at a lot of offices.
