The Role
The internship was varied and really insightful. Everyone was always willing to help you in your day to day tasks. We were also given the opportunity to meet a huge amount of senior leaders and ask them various questions on a weekly basis.
It was a busy time of year and everyone had to get stuck in on a huge amount of tasks but I always felt appreciated and was thanked regularly for my work.
If I needed any support or guidance I could ask easily and would have been given the time. Perhaps at the start of the internship it would have been more beneficial to have more contact.
I was busy every day and never bored. It was a busy period for tesco with lots of new projects underway so all colleagues were working under the same environment. I think maybe sometimes I had too much to do but I would rather have been busy than have nothing to do.
The internship was more about gaining an insight into the world of retail and how tesco buy products. I wasn't given a huge amount of responsibility but did contact suppliers and work on various tasks throughout the day with the product ranges. I was given a project to work on over the 8 weeks so in terms of that I was fully responsible for providing a presentation on my ideas at the end of the internship.
I've learnt a completely new skill set and seen how a company like Tesco's really works. For the short period I was here I would say I have learnt a huge amount and am going back to university with a much wider knowledge of retail.
The Company
Everyone I met at Tesco was really nice and friendly. Even when we requested to HR that we wanted to do something or meet someone it was arranged almost instantly. The team were interested in you as an individual and happy to have a laugh and joke with you.
After completing an industrial placement I've been able to compare how two companies have run their schemes and I can say that the Tesco scheme is very well organised. There were minor bumps along the way but this was the first time they have organised a GM internship so that was to be expected. Overall it was great!
There were internship development days and senior speakers but I didn't find them particular useful, more the standard cringey business development day.
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Tesco's have so many departments and so many employment opportunities, would definitely consider it for a Graduate scheme.
The Culture
My team did go out most Friday's for drinks and we went out for a meal a few times. Have to consider that most people live in London so get the train in or drive into work so its not always easy for people to get together.
Hertfordshire so pretty similar to Essex/London prices.
Not a lot going on really.
Not really that I was aware of.
