The Role
I really enjoyed meeting a variety of people from different areas of the bank, which gave me a much better sense of what working in a bank is like. Everyone was very willing to help me over the course of my internship, and I was given work to do that was relevant and useful to the team, which made me feel like I was doing worthwhile work.
My colleagues were all very friendly and we got on well - I felt that I could easily approach them about any work I had, but the environment was also relaxed and welcoming.
I was given guidance by my line managers, but they were often very busy and at times I did feel like it was quite difficult to track them down in order to ask questions about aspects of my work.
I was never bored or without work, which I very much appreciated. I think the balance was good in that I was able to structure my time and did not get given last minute jobs, and was instead provided with long term projects to really get involved with.
I feel that I was given quite a bit of responsibility during my placement, in terms of working on projects independently. Whilst I was in constant communication with the rest of the team, it was up to me to then use this information to continue and improve the work I was doing. I enjoyed having this responsibility however, as I knew that the work I was doing would then be passed onto the rest of the team and hopefully help them in further work.
I have definitely learnt a huge amount over the last two months which will help me not only in my studies at university, but also in later life and my future career. This is the case both in terms of doing my work, time management and analysis, but also in building relationships and getting on with colleagues.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office on both rotations was very friendly - everyone was busy with work, but that did not mean that they were too preoccupied or stressed that I could not approach them. Everyone got on very well.
The overall work placement was extremely well organised and structured. I always knew what I was supposed to be doing and where I was meant to be, which allowed me to focus on tasks at hand.
RBS definitely invested in the intern class and encouraged our development and training, both in terms of working in a bank but also our future careers in general through various workshops and networking events.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
It is hard to judge my future employment prospects, as the class is highly competitive, but I would expect around half of the group to gain a place on the graduate scheme.
The Culture
The social scene amongst interns and colleagues was great, and there were always events to attend if you wanted to. I really enjoyed these opportunities to both catch up with what everyone had been doing and relax, as well as getting to know my colleagues a little bit better outside of the work place.
Wasn't too expensive in the local area.
There are lots of bars/clubs in the local area and these were very popular with the intern class.
There were many opportunities to get involved in opportunities outside of work, from sports teams to meals or drinks out. There was always something to participate in if you wanted to.
