The Role
My 10 weeks at RBS were fantastic. I was interning in the International Banking division. I do feel however that your desk rotations will highly influence the enjoyment levels you experience. I was very lucky in gaining two good desks. If you would like an extremely steep learning curve then I fully urge you to try get on the corporate advisory desk. It was the best desk for learning.
Most colleagues were very accommodating towards the interns. I felt comfortable asking most people for help. In most cases you could also approach other areas of the bank and they would be happy to show you around desks that you were not assigned to.
I felt at times you had to go look for work (not the case in corporate advisory where you were worked extremely hard) but I felt there was a good balance of help when needed and problem solving.
This can vary wildly based on your desk. Corporate advisory had some very tough hours. For the 4 weeks on the desk I left once before 10.30pm. In addition to this, I was in on two of the weekends including a bank holiday! However, the exposure you get on this desk outweighs the gruesome working hours. During the day it is relaxed but you always have work to do.
Again this can vary - In advisory the analysts have so much work that interns can expect to receive good responsibility. For example, on my first day I produced a company profile that got sent to RBS colleagues in Australia and was used in a call to a colleague in Italy. This was great for me as It challenged me.
Will benefit me greatly
The Company
Hard working yet you could still chat without feeling annoying.
At times I felt that important announcements were sent to us a bit late.
Couldn't fault the services provided.
Great but for me I would have to be able to pick the desk I was on.
The Culture
Hard for me to comment as I was working very long hours. Great bunch of people and I will stay in touch with many of them
Very expensive to live and socialise - expected though
Loved it - fantastic
Yes but not on the desk I worked.
