The Role
Learnt a lot of new things, met nice people, had a great time. Hours could be a bit long, but not too bad compared to other banks.
When in research I could contribute to the desk by producing graphs etc. for the weekly research publication. In trading, less so, as you can't really contribute to the desk much, however they seemed like they valued me enough to spend their time teaching me things.
Generally pretty good support and guidance
Some days extremely busy with project work, others really had to hunt for something to do as I had finished my project, but the traders didn't have time to look through it until later. More busy than not though.
Every day I complied the P&L for the trading desk, which got sent to the head of trading at RBS, so I guess a fair amount of responsibility in some areas, but as I explained earlier, in terms of things which actually contributed to the desks day-to-day work, as a trading intern you can't have any responsibility.
Won't help me at all in my degree as I study natural sciences, however really useful knowledge for the future, including my future career. The rotational aspect of the internship was especially useful in this regard as it meant you got to look at multiple different areas of the bank, and learn a lot more than you would if you just spent the whole 10 weeks on one desk.
The Company
On the trading desk, great - the guys joked around a lot (although if you're not a fan of bad language maybe not the desk for you). In research, it was a lot quieter and more 'chilled', but again, a lot of joking around. Generally the atmosphere at RBS was really great.
Very well organised, with lots of social events
Good - lots of organised events, including lunchtime talk series. The training week was also well organised and done at a great pace, so that everyone could follow, regardless of previous knowledge and experience.
Company Parties/Events
They are planning on converting a fairly high percentage of interns, and feedback has been positive so far. They seem like a good company to work for in the future.
The Culture
All the interns were really nice, but a fair few of them seemed to not be too bothered about meeting up at weekends etc. as a lot were from London and had other friends to meet up with.
London prices! Very expensive (compared tow hat I'm used to anyway).
Pretty good I think, although didn't go out much as I was pretty tired after a day's work!
We had some CSR days, but other than that, not much.
