The Role
I really enjoyed the eight weeks I spent on my summer internship working in Product Development at M&G. The atmosphere was notably relaxed for the finance world, and the work itself was interesting.
My team we very welcoming, and I was very sad to leave. As M&G have a strong graduate scheme you are treated like a graduate, rather than a work experience student, which makes a big difference.
I had weekly catch ups with my manager who went through anything I was having difficulties with, and gave my direction for outstanding tasks.
I seemed to oscillate between not having much to do, and having an awful lot to do. The latter was much more enjoyable! My department had a lot of meetings though, which keeps you occupied,
I was given an individual project that I had complete responsibility for, and got the opportunity to present my findings, analysis and advice to large meetings. The responsibility was daunting at first!
I started the internship not knowing anything about finance, and now I feel prepared to star a career in the industry.
The Company
My floor was quite lively, but hardworking. The investment floors seemed a little quieter.
There was a little confusion over some aspects (e.g. Introductions to the company and potential future prospects as an intern) but in principle the placement ran very smoothly.
M&G are very prepared to invest in their employees. We were given two days training when we arrived, and had weekly lunch meetings to learn what various departments of the business did. I was given the opportunity to shadow a few senior investment employees to understand better that side of the business, and this was encouraged.

Optimistic but we'll have to see! They haven't been very clear about how many job offers they are prepared to make.
The Culture
We went out for drinks a few times, but nothing out of the ordinary. That's more abut the interns themselves than the company though!
In the City of London, so expensive as expected.
Lots of bars and pubs in the immediate vicinity, and obviously being in central London, there is lots to do!
Opportunities weren't thrown at us, but there may have been more than I took notice of!
