The Role
There was quite an emphasis on technical knowledge, and since I was not very technical, it limited teh extent to which I could have enjoyed the experience. But all in all, it was great.
I built really good relationships with my fellow interns and memebrs of the business with whom I interacted. I think I was also able to manage the expectations that they had of me.
The firm's MD sponsors did an amazing job of pointing me in the right direction and givinng me great advice on how best to navigate the program.
There was never a moment when I was bored, or idle. There was always some project or the other to do - whether it was to be done individually or in groups.
Due to my not-too-technical background, I was not given as much responsiblity as some of my fellow interns simply because although I had the right attitude, I did not really have the requisite technical knowledge.
I learnt about the finance industry, about the firm, about what it means to work in a professional environment and about how to have meaningful; interaction with both senior and junior members of the business. And most importantly, I learned hwo to learn. These are all skills that would serve me for life.
The Company
Some desks were very collegial, some others were very formal and stiff. But in all, it was a fun, relaxed atmosphere at work
The program was very well organnised in that it exposed us to the business, to the most senior management and to the most influential/decision makers in the business. And all at the right time, and in the right setting: from one-on-one meetings, to breakfast/lunch meetings, and group presentation sessions
The firm invested quite a lot in trainig me - both in technical skills for the Securities business, and in softer skills like interacting with others.
The summer internship is the firm's largest hiring pool. I feel that I hae a good chance of getting a full time offer. Some interns already have offers so future prospects are high.
The Culture
There definitely was! My classmates are fun loving, interesting people. And generally looked out for each other.
Somewhere in the middle. Did not cost an arm and a leg, but was not 'cheapas chips' either.
London is a city that never sleeps. So nightlife was great! Save for the difficulty of getting transportation back home after a very late night out :-)
The opportunities to get involved in activities outside work depended on individual. If you finished your work early, you could leave. If not, you probably had to burn the midnight oil.
