The Role
My internship has taught me a lot about Technology in an investment bank and changed my previous views. It was an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding internship which a lot of effort and thought has gone into organising.
Everyone that I made contact with during my internship was very welcoming and extremely open to giving me half and hour of their time for my to ask them questions, get to know more about what they do, what they are currently working on and what their experience with the company has been. By the end of my internship I truly felt as though I was part of the team I was working in and felt the team appreciated and had interest in my project.
My manager was extremely supportive and I felt she was invested in my experience at the company. She set up weekly meetings to catch up and discuss how things were going. She gave me guidance on my project and ensure I had access to all the stakeholders I need to contact in order to complete my project. Other managers within the team were also very interested in the work I was doing and they also set up regular catch ups.
There was a good balance between the time I had to spend working on my project and the time I spent in intern events. It gave me a good insight on what it would be like working full time and having multiple projects to complete at the same time.
I was given responsibility for my own project including making sure it was on track, updating stakeholders, getting feedback and the progression of the project. However, due to the work my team complete I was yunable to really getting invloved in other team members projects and contribute to other problems going on within the team.
Technically I build a lot of new skills and worked on my exisiting ones. I learnt how to view the bigger picture when building applications which I feel you do not get when building an application in university for a single user. I built on skills for networking and communication. Also, experienceing working in an large company gave me new skills of professionalism.
The Company
The atmosphere within the office was lively at times but often the social aspect was left to when we had organised events. The team encourages communication when you face problems rather than spending hours trying to fix it yourself.
The internship was very well organised and their was a good variety of events. They also gave us opportunities to meet people from outside the Tech divion which made you feel more part of the larger picture.
They provided us with a number of technical training workshops, provided us with the access to dedicated time with experts of different languages, they set up a lot of skills sessions to improve valued skills within the company.
