The Role
Placement provides excellent overview of how Operation Department functions. Staff is very helpful and you will have an opportunity to shape your placement in the area of your interest. You can engage into various courses enhancing your technical knowledge, as well as arrange full-day with specific teams/managers in order to understand their value added to the whole department and organisation.
Everything is rather within equilibrium and it all depends from your personal engagement.
At every stage of your placement development, you can expect extensive support, whether it is your colleague analyst, secretary or manager.
In first few months it can be very busy (depending on the team allocation), development and deeper understanding of the organisation reduces tension with time. There is opportunity of initiation of your own project, assessment within a team and further development if viable, what gives you greater autonomy and responsibility for data acquisition and transformation.
In my case, initially I was engaged into technical resource allocation and subsequently after few months, my own project development. At any stage, I was offered responsibility alongside with immediate support in the event of doubt.
My experience in first instance, allowed me to increase my technical knowledge and subsequently, data research and transformation, i.e. imperative skills required not only for dissertation development but also an indication of what requires further development in order to succeed in future workplace.
The Company
Mostly positive.
UKAR has released placement student positions for the 1st time, since it has been brought to life in 2010. Placement was well designed and executed, also to an extent it allowed you to develop your own path and learn from the areas you are interested in.
Holding with almost unlimited pool of resources (government owned) can certainly change the balance of the world. UKAR invests not only large amounts of capital but also time, to understand and develop workforce in desired direction. Being based in a satellite unit (Sunderland), it will allow you to travel to HQ in Leeds area for variety of learning development sessions with other placement students based in HQ.
National Travel
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
It also considers placement students in the first place, before external candidates, what for local inhabitants can be of exceptional benefit. However I have received offer from other institution, therefore I did not considered my future within UKAR.
The Culture
Splendid.
That depends on your spending power, capital retention skills and area in which you decide to settle, for the time of your placement. Equilibrium can be easily met.
Again, that depends. It is worth to mention, that Newcastle (few miles away), has been voted, as the best night out for students in the country.
Yes. Sunderland offer not only football but also Olympic swimming pool, skiing and number of other facilities available around the city and in local towns e.g. kart racing, paintball. Further commuting to Newcastle, will only increase the choice in excess of 100%.
