The Role
It was good, giving me a varied view of the company (as I was lucky enough to work at two/three projects during my time with them).
Being largely autonomous reduced the amount of contact I would have otherwise had with colleagues.
As the work I was doing (software development) was outside of the skillset of those around me (engineers), the guidance available to me with respect to my work was very limited.
Being autonomous, the balance of work was at my own pace.
Given that I was a Computer Science student working in an engineering environment the work I did was largely autonomous.
Used a fair number of programming libraries/languages that I hadn't much used previously. Also completed a 3 day first-aid course during my placement.
The Company
Pretty quiet aside from the air-con unit (was a small office ~8 people), occasional discussions about unrelated topics. Also lots of mention about needing a radio.
I was supposed to spend my placement at one location, however this became not possible so I moved to a different location at very short notice and spent the duration of my placement living out of hotels (paid for by expenses).
I received a 3-day first aid at work course, however I was told this was because the company would otherwise be fined for not sending enough people on them after booking them or something similar.
National Travel
They provide many opportunities for people within the engineering sector, however they are only starting to enter the area of internal software development so it is still at the early stages. Personally I would prefer more structure with that regard.
The Culture
Being wales, everything is so far apart, makes things harder without a vehicle.
Pretty standard.
Rhyl being a rundown holiday town, you can probably guess.
