The Role
The work was consistently challenging, but also satisfying - I feel like I've learnt a lot, which makes any struggle worth it.
Everyone was really friendly, but mostly busy with their own work.
I was assigned a manager and mentor, both of whom were happy to answer any questions I had or offer me help.
Any time I ran out of work to do, I could mention it to my mentor or manager and I'd be given more work to do or shown ways to improve my work. At the same time, I was mostly allowed to work at my own pace.
I had a good amount of responsibility for the projects I was working on, within reasonable limits (I didn't really deal with design-related queries, for example)
I've learned a fair amount of a new programming language I might not otherwise have touched for a year or two, which will likely to be very useful for the rest of my degree, and I suspect my experiences will be very useful in future work in the industry.
The Company
Everyone was extremely friendly and the atmosphere was quite informal, though mostly people were busy with their own work.
Everything related to the set-up went very smoothly, and it was easy to contact people arranging it to ask questions.
There was a clear emphasis on my personal development through understanding of my work and I had weekly meetings with my manager to discuss my progress. I also had a mentor, part of whose job it was to help me in my training.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Metaswitch seems like a fantastic place to work, although I may want to explore internships in slightly different industries before settling on any one place.
The Culture
Company houses made it easy to get to know other placement students, and there were quite a few activities (going out for lunch, seeing films etc) arranged amongst the interns.
Accommodation was subsidised, but other costs were as you would expect in London - relatively high.
Didn't experience the nightlife myself. For most of it, you need to go further into central London.
There were a lot of social groups that met at lunchtime or after work, particularly sports groups, which were friendly and easy to get involved with.
