The Role
I really enjoyed my time with the Financial Crime team. It was interesting and I was trusted to have my own project. The first few weeks had a lot of reading and I was quite bored but that improved in weeks 3 onwards.
My colleagues were really supportive. There was never a stupid question. I also appreciated their support when they attended a quiz I had to organise.
The support and guidance was great. If I didn't understand something they would take the time to show me.
My workload was very manageable. The only reason it wasn't scored as a perfect was due to the bordom of reading for the first 2 weeks.
I was given certain responsibility but my worked was always checked and somethimes double checked.
No placement is a waste of time. Skills can even include punctuality, confidence in asking questions and managing your diary.
The Company
My office has a lot of higher graded employees and that was reflected in the seriousness of the office. There was some fun and laughter but the main focus was always the work. This was not the same for other offices I visited.
The placement was well organised but the rating is greatly reduced by IT systems. Its week 9 of 10 and I still don't have access to areas I should. There were also a lot of systems I had to wait weeks for the login details. This held back the work I could do.
The company allowed me to attend meetings unrelated to my placement but relevant to my chosen study/career path. They didn't have to do this but they were so keen to develop my contacts and invest in my personal interests.
Befoe the placement I was not ever considering applying for the graduate programme or working with Lloyds Banking Group, however, after the placement I am now giving this seriou consideration. This is mainly due to the flexi-time options, potential pay scale and the many job opportunities.
The Culture
There were many social events amongst the interns so those travelling away from home didn't feel lonely.
Edinburgh is always more expensive during the festival so the prices were all much higher than usual.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe was on so there was lots to do.
There were quiz nights and one social meet but not a lot.
