The Role
The office environment was great. Right in the middle of central Birmingham with the Bullring and train station a 5 minute walk away. The team were really nice and friendly. The work itself was tedious and boring at times. Going on customer visits and doing the follow up stuff around them was the only worthwhile work I did and enjoyed; but I only went on one in 10 weeks!
In terms of the team atmosphere it was really good. Everyone had a laugh together, there was banter. But when my Line Manager asked if I could go on any customer visits with the Relationship Directors it was difficult, to say the least.
I had weekly meetings with my Line Manager and discussed work-load,which was good. But I did have to prod my LM alot to actually have the sit-down when it was scheduled.
I was quite underwhelmed with the amount and type of work I was given. It was mainly admin work, which was annoying. I did raise this with my LM and he asked the RDs, again, if I could accompany them on customer visits, but there was little to no response. The only work which was interesting was the work I did around the one and only customer visit I went on. So this entails, writing-up my notes which I took at the meeting, creating a Credit Proposal and supplement documents to send off to the Credit Management Centre.
Hardly any. The only time any responsiblity was given to me was when I drew up the credit proposal for a company who wanted to increase their Overdraft facility.
I took part in the LBG Charity Challenge which honed my leadership, planning and organising skills. As for my actual internship, there wasn't really that much opportunity to develop yourself. I learnt a bit more about the commercial sector of the bank.
The Company
The team was really great. They knew how to have a laugh. They we're relaxed and welcoming.
Mid-Markets is a customer focused sector of the bank, but I was only given one opportunity to go on a customer visit. This may have been due to people being on holiday (internship was July-August time), but I was there for 10 weeks, so I expected more than this.
There wasn't much training avaliable. The intern/scholar team did provide central devlopment webinars you could dial-in to though.
I was referred onto LBG's graduate programme, as long as I get a 2:1 in my degree overall. I, personally, won't be taking LBG up on this because I want to persue a career in teaching and only did the interhship as apart of my Scholarship programme with LBG.
The Culture
I was in Birmingham and there wasn't really anyone in the local vicinity to go out with. But the opening and closing events held at the beginning and end (respectively) of the internship were really great. They offered all the interns a chance to network and share experiences with each other.
I lived at home, which was 40minutes on the train. LBG subsidised my travel, paying any anmount above £378 (Cost of a Zones 1-6 underground ticket for 10 weeks).
I went out with the people in my office to a local restaurant which was nice. I didn't go out in Birmingham during my internship; but the nighlife and clubs available are suppose to be really good for a night out.
There was the opportunity to raise money fo LBG's charity of the year through the charity challenge. All the interns were put into groups of 8 and had to raise as much as possible during the 10 weeks. My team managed to raise arounf £1380 which is really good.
