The Role
My placement gave me a good insight into transport as part of logistics operation within the construction industry. Understanding of how maintenance of large commercial fleets work, as well as opportunity to develop basic IT skills whilst on the job including Microsoft Excel and Access.
Friendly staff throughout the department, who were always willing to help which was vital for me in getting the answer's I required for the projects I was set.
Great support throughout placement, with regular review meetings and understanding of skill limitations regarding some specific tasks, but appropriate training given where needed.
Always tasks to be carried out, including project work as well as just some basic admin and filing. I think that you could go through this placement with more than enough work, it just depends on the individuals effort and commitment.
I was given some responsibility with regards to my own project work I was given, however any substantial responsibility difficult over a 2 month period or on any placement to an extent.
Learnt some excellent database knowledge, which will be vital for research projects at university where data analysis is concerned. Further understanding and knowledge of logistics and transport, which could be used for operational modules I plan to take.
The Company
Fun and lively but understanding that work had to be done.
Continuous contact with manager and HR to arrange meetings with other placement students, as well as visits to branches within the UK.
Some computer training provided by individuals in IT department. Online IT training provided as well. Manager invested some time to discuss transport law and other important related issues with logistics.
Appears to be a good graduate programme to specialise in certain areas, but also graduate positions that covers a large range of the business.
The Culture
Started placement later than everyone else so didn't get to meet anyone, however wasn't an issue.
Lived at home over an hour away from where I worked.
Didn't go out in the area, but know that Sheffield is a pretty good night out.
Some social events with colleagues.
