The Role
I definitely suggest that you apply for the internship at Cancer Research UK. I think it’s been the best experience I have ever received. I had many projects to complete that actually had an impact on the final decision, I felt as though all the tasks was meaningful and worthwhile.
As soon as we had our introduction period I felt very comfortable all the other interns were lovely and I was treated like family on my team straight away. Honestly, the people were laid-back and treated me with respect and not like any other intern.
We had one-one sessions every week which was helpful to my development, my line-manager cared so much and made sure I was continuously getting help where ever I needed it. I had useful and relevant feedback. My line-manager really helped me grow.
Most of the time I was kept busy with projects and tasks, however when I did not have much to do which was about 20% of the time I used my initiative and asked if anyone on my team needed help and they would happily assign me tasks that they have been working on. Fortunately It wasn’t just the typical photocopying duties!
Some tasks I was given responsibilities, obviously not all because some of the tasks were beyond my knowledge/ expertise. However my line-manager would ask me if I was comfortable to lead certain tasks and left me to it. This was a shock to me as I didn’t expect it, it was nice to lead a project and take ownership.
As I study Marketing, all my experience here was practical, which to a new marketer is a great opportunity. I learnt so much I attended meetings and actually was part of a product launch. It has been the best experience I have encountered. I suggest that anyone that wants a real experience definitely apply at Cancer Research UK!
The Company
The atmosphere was great; it was not too loud not to quiet. We had the odd laugh and joke in my team and from what I can here other teams had the same environment. Everyone dresses casual but not too casual. I loved the environment!
The overall scheme was extremely organised my Internship Office was extremely helpful and lovely. She made sure we settled in properly and enjoyed our stay. We had structured guidelines to help us with our development which was also sent to my line-manager. I think the internship was very orderly.
My team really allowed me to get involved and attend all workshops and sessions. This really helped me develop and understand more about the industry I hope to be in when I finish university. I also was given a couple workshops to help me on my prospects and CV.
As I am a recturning student I couldnt apply for jobs, however they awalys advertised and made students aware of opportunities! I really want to work there after university its such a great organisation
The Culture
All the interns were lovely! We all went out and had a great time in the area. There is a place called The York most of the time we went there after work! Definitely check it out and organise it with the other interns!
Honestly I went out a lot! I was invited to team drinks, team socials and team gatherings. It can be slightly costly! However if you decline it’s not a problem I never felt pressured and people often understood as I was only an intern!
I think there is an 02 in the area so go to the Propaganda. My interns invited to go out however I couldn that night, apparently it was a great night!
I believe they had Yoga classes but us intern organised a succesful event! If you get the chance do something for the charity! Its great to gain more experience and build a bond with other interns!
