The Role
The placement was very good! I really enjoyed it! I would give 8 out of 10 to Bloomberg!
My colleagues gave me lots of help during my placement. Personally I don't have a strong background, but with their help and encouragement, I finally made lots of real contributions!
Bloomberg is a big world-leading company with strong innovative technology. I would take ages for me to get into this big environment without any guidance from my mentor or team leader. They gave me a lot of help and advice when I was purposing my design and scratching the implementation.
It was kinda balanced. That was because I managed my project myself, so I had fully control on my daily tasks.
My project was to improve an existing testing tool used by my team. That tool was heavily used on daily testing purposes, and I was the one who is responsible to that tool! It was really exciting to see my contributions making some differences to my users, though they were internal users.
I was not good at C++ programming at all before I entered Bloomberg. Now I have developed C++, JavaScript and Python programming skills. Apart from these, I also learnt a lot about social networking skills, presentation skills, interviewing skills, etc. Those skills were taught by HRs in the company, and they are definitely very very educational in my furtuer studies/careers.
The Company
One of the reason I chose Bloomberg is their working environment. It is very very open, friendly environment where people could communicate without any concerns. The atmosphere encourages people to share their ideas/thoughts with others.
The entire placement is well designed and set up. I was very warm welcomed in the beginning, and had a wonderful time in Bloomberg. The HR/Managers/TeamLeaders were very kind and friendly.
As a new hire, we had a 1-week technical training which covered basic programming stuff in Bloomberg environment. Apart from that, we also had several lectures about social networking, new hire skill set development, lunch & learn (insight into other depts in the company), etc.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Bloomberg is a company with great potential. It's already made great achievement in this industry. I believe it is a good idea to get a job in this company and start my career there!
The Culture
Yes. We had a lot of fun with other placement students and summer interns. We were just like a family.
My office is located in central London, the living cost is considerably higher than any other place. Still, the cost of socialising is affordable.
My office is located in central London, so the nightlife is much more interesting than other cities/places.
I had a volunteer activity. Bloomberg has lots of opportunities to do volunteering. My job was to paint an old building to make it more bright and fresh! :D
