The Role
The experience has been challenging yet enjoyable. In terms of the organisaiton, the vast majority of people I met at Santander were very welcoming and were willing to have an intern as an addition to the team rather than an outsider.
I felt as an intern I was put to good use, undertaking projects which were relevant and useful.
During the last stage of the internship when I joined a specific desk I receieved excellent support from my mentor and the rest of the team. Mentors/Buddy's were willing to take time to answer questions and explain some of the more complex products the bank had to offer.
During the internship you were able to be as busy as you wanted to be. Some desks were more reliant on interns taking initiative and organising meetings with colleagues from different product areas, others had a more strucutured rotation. Alongside desk specific tasks a weekly challenge was set which provided interns with a task to fill time when not occupied with desk work. Workload was challenging but not overwhelming.
I was given more responsability in some areas than others, simply due to the nature of the desk. During my 3 week desk placement at the end of my internship I was given a fair amount of responsibility but again, not to the point where it was overwhelming.
Colleagues were willing to take time out of their day to train interns and explain how each individual desk operated.
The Company
Different atmosphere in different teams. Generally a lighthearted atmosphere with a strong work ethic.
An introductionary week was set up for the GB&M interns which allowed us to meet senior figures from each rotation we would be undertaking. We were given a crash course on the different areas within global banking and markets by the head of each desk. There were also some networking events in the first week and later on in in the internship.
There was excellent exposure to senior figures within the bank which would probably not be the case at some of the larger institutions in the city. This included 1:1 meeting with the head of each desk and a networking lunch with the head of Santander GBM.
National Travel
The Global Banking&Markets internship does not have a graduate scheme so employment prospects are limited, however their is potential to join a different area of the bank on another graduate scheme.
The Culture
A few nights out organised amongst ourselves.
London prices
Good but expensive!
Charity fundraising for the final week of our internship, which will give us the opportunity to raise money outside of work.
