The Role
I have really enjoyed working at Sky during my placement year. I think it's a great company to work for, and really gives placement students the opportunity to get involved and do something worthwhile during their year in industry.
During my placement, I feel I have been treated the same as anyone else that I work with in my team. My opinions and thoughts have been listened to, the work I have carried out has been useful, and the effort I put in valued. - This has made me feel valued by my colleagues as part of the team.
The guidance and support I have been given has been great. For starters my team and line manager have all been brilliant - very approachable, and willing to help me out if i ever needed it. Also during our induction week, HR also put us in contact with several other people to go to for support and guidance. One being a graduate 'buddy' and another was someone in a senior position in the business to act as a mentor, both of which have been helpful at one point of other.
The workload varies from week to week, depending on what was going on within the team. However, if there was ever a time my workload was light and I didn't have too much on - once I let someone know, I was always given something else to be getting on with as there was always something that needed to be done!
Something I have appreciated about working for Sky, is that the work that I'm given is actually useful, I feel like I can really contribute to the projects I work on. I also feel that the responsiblity I have been given has increasing with the length of time I have been working at Sky. This has helped me to enjoy my placement as it means I wasn't thrown in the deep end for my first couple of months, but now have enough responsibility that I feel my work is worthwhile. Sometimes I do feel like I could handle some more demanding work - but hopefully the responsiblity I am given will continue to increase throughout the rest of my placement, to keep me feeling challenged.
I think most placements would have been a great asset to my future degree studies and working life after that, as it really gives an insight into how a business works, and the day-to-day realties of a working environment. However, working at Sky has been especially beneficial, as it is a very fast-paced environment, which has pushed me to develop new skills and knowledge quickly. Also I have been able to get involved in a variety of projects and types of work, which has given me greater opportunity to learn and develop new skills.
The Company
The atmosphere in my office is very work-focused, as most people are very busy, which can make it a bit quiet. However, some people do try to grab lunch together if possible, and arrange some social get-togethers out side of the office.
The placement was really well set-up. We had an inital induction week which was both fun and really helpful. We got an overview of all different departments within Sky form the people that worked in them, which was really helped to get a grasp of the business and where we fitted in. Also we got to have some time in the studios and later had a trip up to Scotland to see some of the other areas of the business. All of which were useful to get an understanding of Sky as a whole. Also we were set up with several contacts for support and guidance as previously mentioned, and although we could speak to our contacts in HR at any point, they also gave us the space to get on with our roles and get involved with our individual teams.
Sky provides plently of opportunities for my personal training and development through the development studio - where employees can sign up for courses, online learning, books, etc. Also within my team I have been encouraged to consider any other training or experiences I would like to have during this year.

I would love to come back and work at Sky after my finishing my degree. I think it's a company with huge opportunity for anyone who is willing to work hard and get involved. As it's such a large company - I feel like during my time here so far, I still haven't been able to grasp all the opportunities that may be avalible.
The Culture
It is greater London - So the cost of living and socialising is going to be expensive, which is as expected.
It is a little bit too far out of central London - so there isn't much in the immediate area. ~But it's easy enough to get into central London, where there is obviously more than enough to do.
