The Role
Placement was enjoyable and I picked up a lot through doing a wide range of tasks. I got to work on some exciting projects that a limited number of people will be involved with.
Good atmosphere in the department and I felt welcomed in immediately. Was regularly told about the importance and value of the projects I was doing.
Manager was always nearby if I had a problem and was happy to help. Other colleagues were always happy to explain things as well.
Some days were very quiet with little to do. This was partly down to unexpected delays in the project.
Given access to restricted access areas for work. Most work was done independently.
The learning curve is quite steep at RR and you pick up a number of useful skills for the future. Teamwork and project management skills will help me on projects in the final year of my course.
The Company
Lots of jokes and conversation happening. Everybody got on well. I worked with 2 other interns in my office who I got along well with.
There was work ready from the first day. Some of the training courses required for floor access could have been arranged for earlier in the placement.
RR put you on any training courses needed and treat you like a full-time employee.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
This was my second placement at the company so I'm fairly confident about being offered a graduate job. RR are expanding quickly, so there are many opportunities for graduate engineers.
The Culture
Interns would regularly go out, and social events were organised by the apprentice association. Interns were dispersed all over the city so it was quite tough to organise many big social events.
Bristol is quite an expensive place to live, but I'm a student in the city so I lived in my student house. This saved me quite a bit of money.
Bristol is a great place to go out with many great clubs, bars and pubs around the city centre.
There are many activities set up through the apprentice and grad association, including sports clubs and teaching in schools. Always a lot to get involved in.
